Under the same diameter and pressure, the maximum stress in the hemispherical head is only half of the maximum stress of the cylindrical shell, so the required wall thickness is only 1/2 of the wall thickness of the cylinder. However, it is difficult to manufacture because of the big depth of the hemispherical head. If the radius of the hemispherical head is increased and the radius of the cylinder is constant, the radius of the head is increased, and the radius of the cylinder is kept constant. This flangless hemispherical head has a shallow depth, and it has the following characteristics:
(1) compared with the hemispherical head, the thickness should be increased as a result of the increase of the radius.
(2) in the spherical head, which is connected with the shell body, due to inconsistency with each other under the inner pressure deformation, will produce the edge stress, local stress value is often the edge of the cylinder and head of normal stress several times, therefore, the sectional spherical head force bad, can only be used in low pressure applications. In order to ensure that the connection between head and cylinder can not be damaged, it is required that all fillet welds should be used for connection fillet welds, and the radius of the head should not be greater than the inner diameter of the cylinder, so as to control the thickness of the head properly.
